The Shining Dark
It was a normal day, just like any other day at the very beginning of fall. Nothing seemed to be special, but the only extraordinary thing was that the classes were about to start at Cambridge Campus. A big university that makes anybody feel like in a castle and transports the people to a medieval era; the place full of enormous green lawns where the students feel free, but let’s be clear, even though the classes do not make any student excited, no teenager likes to be home because being laid down in the couch all day does not compare to the feeling of the fresh air hitting your face every step you take. A lot of students were at the library in the Campus getting the books for the beginning classes, it was a crowded busy day. Among the people around, there was a standing out a
wavy long-hair guy called Damian, a person with the effect of a sunny day with no sunblock marked in his skin, but with the darkness of the night shown in his eyes. Damian was buying an important book, that had been yearning since long ago, a reading called “The Power of Shadows”, that describes the real taste of him, its content embraces anyone who reads it, because its main idea is based on the strength that people receive with the fact of staying away from the society to feel good with themselves.
Damian was struggling, he could not find the book, suddenly he saw an outgoing new girl at the Campus, who he had never seen before. For his surprise, she was happily holding the book he was looking for, just like a child holds a new Christmas gift. At first instance, he felt annoyed by the fact that girl who seemed just like any typical, blonde, Barbie girl (due to her good-looking glow) stole his dreamed book. He would have never thought that kind of girl wanted that book. Although she was not his type, at the moment she was leaving the library, their eyes met for the very first time, Damian did not know whether he was feeling either hate or any other unknown sentiment that he had never felt so far.
Time passed, doors opened, the bell rang, and classes began. Damian entered his classroom as usual, when he ran into her, Hanna Milok. She was taking the same class as him that morning. He could not believe that girl was sitting down just in front of his desk, space hardly occupied by someone in his classroom ever due to Damian’s introverted personality. Once during the break time, Hanna Milok, sat at the aisle, she took out her new book to read it. That is when she saw Damian spying on her, she gave Damian a sincere, happy smile and invited him to come over; nevertheless, his mouth wanted to say no, but an impulse of excitement along with nervousness inside him accepted with a hesitated gesture.
At that moment, two poles apart connected and turned into one. Because of the fact that two young guys were sharing the same taste in the genre of a book, that not everyone would be willing to read. A book that had to be read by two souls, and one same feeling that conveniently they shared. They agreed to meet every day to read one chapter of the book. At the end of every chapter, Damian not only finished reading it; but also, he finished a long period of loneliness. Every day they woke up eager waiting the night to come, what they had not realized was that the connection between them was not only the book but also the sparks they felt in every word they read hooking one to another with every single letter in a sentence. The eleventh chapter after 2 weeks reading and analyzing each idea developed in the reading broke out what Damian would have never expected, he was completely in love. On the other hand, there was Hanna starting a new chapter in her life; even though she was not sure about the content of that chapter, she was ready to discover it; mutual attraction was indeed present.
The idea of being together was incredible and crazy for him, there is a big difference between them; however, Damian dreamed with a world in which a little sheep could fearlessly interact with a big lion, but not all the time life is like dreams, he knew that girl was like a needle in a haystack, he could not forgive himself if he hurt her, how could he hurt the only thing that makes him feel alive? Damian also longed for a future in which the night and the day could meet at the same time as an eclipse when the moon covers the sun; nevertheless, that feeling was held inside him because he would not dare to speak out his heart. A real man knows when it is time to protect his girl even against himself, and this was the case. At the moment he met Hanna he knew that love was not only about staying with or kissing a person, he understood that love was about looking after that girl, and deep his heart he was not the best option, because Damian felt more inferior than Hanna and incapable of loving such a kind and sweet girl.
It was time to get through the last chapter of the book, Hanna was expecting Damian to express his feelings towards her because the thought of confessing these feelings was dancing on her mind, besides she did not dare to take the first step. As long as every line of this final chapter was read, she was even more eager to express herself out, but something inside her held her back. On the other hand, Damian was getting sadder because he knew the end of the book would be the closure of the link between them. The last word was read, inside his heart was raining. Every gesture on Hanna’s face was recorded in his mind, he will never regret that moment when that incredible girl stole his book, maybe he did not understand that much about love and that kind of stuff, but what he really knew was the fact that she was his truth, she was the world that he needed, a word in which he was alive. That world would live forever in his heart, that Firefly would glow his dark night forever.
They finally went through “The Power of Shadows”, no more read meetings no longer excuses to meet up. Damian somehow wanted to be the kind of guy he would like to see in a mirror, in his eyes he saw Hanna's brightness, but a simple book was not enough (from Damian's perspective) to take the first step towards a woman's heart he had sworn did not exist, Damian looked himself like a plastic crown and in his mind Hanna was a 24k golden cover. He had the utopia of linking up to these two elements, but he felt that she was going to make him a better person but he would never be able to give her the same.
Was actually a simple book the only connection between two people, Damian and Hanna? Was this it, when the book ends? Because indeed there were no longer stares down between them, it was not only like if one of them (not to say both) had disappeared from the globe. Had the book reached its goal? Had Damian and Hanna really found the strength that the book conveyed? Because at the moment they said goodbye, each of them, silently took his own way hiding their most sacred secret inside their hearts.
